Are Frying Pans Made Of Bakelite?

We use Bakelite to make handles for all cookware including frying pans due to its non-conducting and heat-resistant nature.

However, we don’t use Bakelite in making cookware and frying pans because it can’t withstand the high frying temperature. 

Apart from its use in making frying pan handles, it also serves to create combs, switches, washing machines, car destruction caps, and clocks.

Melting Point Of Bakelite:

Bakelite melts at 217-220 °C (423-428 °F) temperature. Bakelite only softens a bit at low temperatures. 

It doesn’t really melt as we increase the temperature, it further hardens. Consequently, it breaks into pieces. 


Bakelite is rigid, heat resistant, a good insulator, and scratch resistant. Besides these qualities, you can also mold it quickly. Therefore, we mostly use it in making handles for cookware and frying pans.

Reasons For Using Bakelite To Make Frying Pan’s Handles

Heat resistant:

It can resist temperatures up to 285°C. This ability makes it the ideal choice for making frying pan handles.


Bakelite doesn’t catch fire because it is non-flammable. These factors contribute to the usage of Bakelite in frying pan handles.

Does Heating Make Bakelite Toxic?

Bakelite, a thermosetting polymer hardens on heating instead of melting. As temperature increases its rigidity also increases.

It breaks down into pieces as the temperature crosses its melting point. It degrades by 45.46 wt%. You can’t remold the Bakelite.

Formaldehyde and phenol, two extremely hazardous compounds, make up Bakelite. In addition to these two materials, Bakelite also consists of asbestos which is highly dangerous for human health.

Overheating of Bakelite produces a foul irritating smell. Formaldehyde produces this smell.

It not only has a bad smell but is highly dangerous for human health. 

Because it causes many diseases including irritation to the throat, nose, and eyes. Apart from this, it also causes cancer.

Bakelite also contains brown asbestos (amosite) up to 5%. Asbestos is a highly toxic chemical that causes respiratory problems including mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Are Teflon and Bakelite same?

No, Teflon and Bakelite are not the same material when it comes to pans. Teflon is a brand name for a type of nonstick coating, often made from a synthetic compound called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

It is known for its excellent nonstick properties, allowing food to slide off easily and making for easy cleanup.

In contrast, Bakelite is a type of heat-resistant plastic that was historically used for cookware handles and knobs but is not a nonstick coating.

While both materials have been used in kitchenware, they serve different purposes, with Teflon providing nonstick properties, and Bakelite offering heat-resistant handles for pans.
